Peek inside the show apartment of Barcelona landmark Casa Burés

Not every modernista (or art nouveau) apartment building has been converted to luxury dwellings in Barcelona’s chic Eixample district. But it’s unlikely that one as magnificent as the Casa Burés will come up for sale elsewhere in the neighbourhood’s famous grid of avenues.

Dating from 1905, the Casa Burés was built by a wealthy textile baron, who had his offices on the ground floor. For the upper floors, he commissioned the best artisans of the period to create a series of ornate spaces. Floral tiles, wall frescoes, mosaic floors, lush ceiling friezes, marquetry, stained glass and sculpture; no surface was left untouched by modernisme’s sense of romance and whimsy.

After decades of abandonment, the historic building was acquired by Bonavista Developments. It’s carefully led the Barcelona property through a meticulous restoration process, while expanding the original 12 apartments to 26, now on the market starting from €1.725m. These include loft spaces on the ground floor and attic and a communal area with a heated pool on the lower ground floor.

Local practice Estudio vilablanch designed the show apartment (pictured) filling it with Italian furniture and contemporary art.
