Ley Beckham en España

The Beckham Law in Spain is a special tax system that has appealed to many international investors over the last few years. It is a measure seeking to attract foreign talent by offering highly competitive tax advantages, also making it of interest to anyone looking to move to a city like Barcelona.

It is critical to understand how it works, who is eligible, and how it may influence decisions as important as buying a property or investing in real estate.

What is the Beckham Law in Spain and how does it work?

This tax law attracts anyone moving to Spain for work, and its main advantage is allowing these workers to pay tax only on the income they generate in Spanish territory.

  • Fixed rate of 24% up to 600,000 euros
  • 47% on income above this amount.

Background

The measure was created in 2005 via Royal Decree 687/2005.. David Beckham utilized it after being signed by Real Madrid. The name just stuck.

Although it may have arisen with an association with soccer, its main objective has always been to make it easier for skilled workers to come to Spain and boost the Spanish economy’s competitiveness.

How does the Beckham Law apply when purchasing a home?

The Beckham Law provides tax savings.. It also boosts capacity for real estate investment. For many foreign citizens, these advantages facilitate access to luxury homes, which explains its impact on the real estate market in cities like Barcelona.

Fiscal incentives for international investors

Tax savings

The main advantage is a fixed tax rate, shielding taxpayers from income tax (IRPF) progressivity and considerably reducing tax burden.

Income tax

Only income generated in Spain is declared.. Any income received abroad, with some exceptions, is not taxable.

Wide scope

The law is currently applicable to a variety of professional profiles, from executives to digital entrepreneurs.

Duration

The Beckham Law applies to the year of arrival and the following five tax years, i.e., six years total.

Straightforward process

You only have to file a modelo 149 form with the Spanish National Agency for Tax Administration in the six months after registering with Spanish Social Security. It is important to attach the corresponding employment documentation and ID.

Potential reforms or amendments in 2025

Some amendments may be made over the course of the year, especially in terms of oversight and fiscal rules. The Spanish National Agency for Tax Administration is showing greater interest in guaranteeing compliance with the law.

This measure was consolidated as a key tool to attract foreign talent and capital to Spain.. In this context, trusting a luxury developer in Barcelona like Bonavista to purchase a property in Barcelona as a foreigner may be a less taxing decision, in all senses of the word, thanks to the Beckham Law.
